History

On May 14th, 1956, a group of men consisting of the Marinotes and the Glee club joined together to found the Eta Nu chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. The chapter has thrived on the Winona campus of Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota throughout its years, developing a rich brotherhood amongst its members and a steady importance in music on campus. This is due to the virtues that are instilled in each brother during the ever-changing pledging process, with its roots linking back to the first pledge classes of the chapter, with new events being added or adapted to fit the current fraternity. Recently the active brothers of the Eta Nu chapter, after discussions with the Province Governor and with the National office, came to the conclusion that it was in the best interest of the continuation of our brotherhood to disaffiliate our chapter with the national fraternity. On September 16th, 2024, the Eta Nu chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was officially closed. Following it arose the new men’s music fraternity, Per Musicam Amamus (PMA), consisting of the active brothers of Eta Nu when it was closed, and recognizes all alumni members of the Eta Nu chapter as brothers of Per Musicam Amamus. Per Musicam Amamus hopes to continue bringing the values of the Eta Nu chapter to students on campus, while also having room for the fraternity to grow, truly, into its own.

PMA has been one of the largest influences of music on campus. Over our history we have been involved severely with major events on campus such as Gaslight, founding Blue Angel, Wee Hours, Fireside, Battle of the Bands, and Fire Angel with innumerable smaller events in which our fraternity has rented sound and lights equipment on campus. The chapter has also helped many organizations on campus, many of which are gone, get started including the active chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) on campus as well as founding the Oldie Moldie All-stars, an oldies music band, in 1970, which still plays for events on campus to this day. Today, we remain as one of the last remaining pieces of music on campus in conjunction with the sisters of SAI, and the SMUMN choir and band. We continue, as a part of the fraternity’s purpose, to promote music at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota through the active participation in Blue Angel, Gaslight, Oldie Moldie All-starts performances, and the recently established weekly event of Live and Loud.
